First of all, congratulations on completing your O-Levels! You have worked hard, and now you have your results in hand.
But before you relax, there is one more big decision to make: Your JC Subject Combination.
You are probably looking at the form right now, wondering if you should take H2 Mathematics. You might have heard it is very difficult. You might be thinking of taking H1 Math instead to “play it safe.”
Before you tick that box, you need to know the truth: H2 Math is the “Golden Ticket” for university.
1. The University “Gatekeeper”
For many top university degrees in Singapore (NUS, NTU, SMU), H2 Math is a prerequisite. This means if you don’t take it now, you cannot apply for these courses two years later.
Common courses that require (or strongly prefer) H2 Math:

Engineering: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace.

Tech: Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence.

Science: Physics, Chemistry, Statistics.

Business & Humanities: Business Administration, Economics, Accountancy, Business Analytics.
If you drop H2 Math, you are closing the door to almost 70% of the popular courses. For most students, H2 Math is a “must-have.”
While some of the university year 1 courses allow for a good pass in H1 Math, it is still more advantageous for students who have taken H2 Math at A level. This is because the Year 1 Mathematics and Statistics courses will include more advanced calculus topics and also differential equations as well as more advanced statistics topics like complex permutation & combination and probability questions which are not covered in H1 Math.
2. Reality Check: It’s Not Just “Harder E-Math”
So, you have decided to take H2 Math. Now comes the warning.
The jump from O-Level Math to H2 Math is massive. In O-Levels, you mostly dealt with numbers and standard calculations. In H2 Math, you deal with abstract concepts and proofs.
The First Hurdle: Functions and Graphs Most JCs start with the topic of “Functions and Graphs.” In Secondary school, you plotted graphs point-by-point. In JC, you cannot do that.
You need to use logic to “transform” and sketch graphs you have never seen before. You need to know what a graph looks like just by looking at the equation.
This is where many students get their first shock. They realize their calculator cannot save them anymore.
