You have probably heard the rumors from other parents.

“Additional Math (A-Math) is the killer subject.”

“My child got an A1 for Math in Sec 2, but failed A-Math in Sec 3.”

It happens all the time. A-Math is one of the main reasons students drop a subject or lose confidence in Secondary 3.

But A-Math is not impossible. In fact, it can be the easiest subject to score an ‘A1’ in—if you learn it the right way.

Let’s look at the common mistakes students make, and how Mr. Chan helps them improve.

Why Your Sec 2 Math Methods Won’t Work

In Lower Secondary Math (and even E-Math), you can often survive by memorizing steps. You see a question, you remember the formula, and you plug in the numbers.

A-Math is different. E-Math focuses on calculation. A-Math focuses on logic and algebra.

The questions change shape. If you only memorize the “steps,” you will get stuck the moment the examiner twists the question. You need to understand why the formula works, not just how to use it.

Meet Mr. Chan: The Olympiad Advantage

This is where Mr. Chan makes the difference.

Mr. Chan is our Math Specialist and also a Math Olympiad Trainer.

Some parents hear “Olympiad” and think, “Oh no, that sounds too hard for my child.”

Actually, it is the opposite.

Olympiad Math looks for the smartest, fastest way to solve problems. Mr. Chan teaches this same approach to his A-Math students.

How Mr. Chan teaches differently:

He teaches the shortcut: He shows students how to look at a complex question and see the simple pattern hidden inside.

He focuses on Algebra: Algebra is the “language” of A-Math. Mr. Chan builds a very strong foundation here so students don’t make careless mistakes.

He explains the ‘Why’: When you understand the logic, you don’t need to memorize 50 different formulas. You just need to know a few key rules.

Never Get Stuck at Home: Videos & Materials

In school, if you miss a step during the teacher’s explanation, you are lost. When you go home to do homework, you forget what happened in class.

At MindQuest, we make sure learning continues after the class ends.

Our 3-Part Resource System:

1️⃣ Video Lessons: We record our lessons. If your child forgets how to solve a difficult question, they can watch the replay at home. They can pause, rewind, and learn at their own speed.

2️⃣ Curated Notes: Our teaching materials are designed to be simple. We cut out the heavy text and give you clear examples.

3️⃣ Targeted Exercises: We don’t just give “more homework.” We give “smart homework.” Our exercises are chosen to test specific skills, so students stop making the same mistakes.

Start Term 1 on the Right Foot

The first few topics in A-Math (Indices, Surds, and Polynomials) are the foundation for the whole two years. If a student gets lost in the first month, they usually stay lost for the rest of the year.

School teachers often have to move fast to finish the syllabus. They cannot always wait for every student to catch up.

By joining our weekly class at the start of the year, your child will master these topics as they are taught in school. This prevents the common “Term 1 panic” and keeps their grades high.

We offer:

  • Group Classes: Small groups where students can learn from each other.
  • VIP Private Classes: Direct coaching for students who need extra help or want to move faster.

A-Math is only a “killer subject” if you try to fight it with rote memorization. If you use logic and the right techniques, it becomes a puzzle that you can solve easily.
